A good baton or stick?
I have always find it quite intriguing that many conductors spend a good time of their career looking for that perfect “wand”. If we all can remember, ‘the wand chooses the wizard, the statement told to Harry in the first of the Harry Potter movie series. I kind of want to believe that the statement is true but I have 5 sticks myself! So how can I explain this?
A Stick for every occasion
I use a long stick for parades and when I want to look flamboyant. I tried this on the concert rehearsal last friday at my school and it kind of got in the way on what I really should be focusing on – getting the band playing together! Haha.. So I guess it is really important to be clear with what we want our “wands” to do 🙂
Ok. I think there is a need to focus on each joint of the arm and to ensure that each part is utilized according to the needs of the score. But! First and foremost should be the ability to comprehend the difference and functions of each joint so that fluidity is achieved when in use.
