Even before the Conductor steps on the podium, the orchestra would already know how the session would end. How can this be possible if the members have not met the person yet? How will they know what to expect or what can be expected from the person who will be leading them through a music programme for an upcoming concert? The truth is, they can’t. They can imagine what it would be like based on the conductor’s past achievements and accolades. But the orchestra can never truly predict how the rehearsals will progress and what would be the eventual outcome. Conductors know this and they use this knowledge to their advantage!
How? Through P.I.C.K.
- Preparation
- Introduction
- Collaboration
- Keeping in touch
Nothing beats good Preparation. Even before standing in front of the Orchestra, the conductor would spend many hours going through “documents” so that he or she will be able to provide a convincing perspective that will be easily understood and accepted by the members in the Orchestra, or be able to facilitate a healthy discussion. These could involve historical references and research papers and even “acting skills”.
A good Introduction on Day 1 of the meeting will go a long way in developing a productive and successful relationship. This can be initiated by the “Broker” prior to the start of the meeting or can also be done by the Conductor him or herself. First impressions (good ones) can go a really long way.
Through the sessions or meetings, the conductor needs to adapt a Collaborative approach and not be dictating the flow of the meeting. Conductors of the past always wanted to have their point of views heard and adhered to. Straying away from that could cause a musician to lose his or her employment. But in today’s times, this method of leadership is generally not preferred.
After the project, conductors ALWAYS Keep in Touch with the “Broker” and in some instances, members of the orchestra. This is important in the event of future opportunities to work together again on concerts or projects.
