Music arranging can be really difficult if you do not know how to go about it. It can also really easy if you have the “formulas” at your finger tips. A really long time ago, I attended a music arranging workshop by Mr Mitsuo Nonami and I learnt a lot from that workshop. We were thought how to arrange for small ensembles and we also exposed to pop music arranging. When I was studying, we had to arrange many pieces for the military band and as a final year project, we had to arrange a musical for military band. I did Annie. Not really well done but i put together some of the more popular songs and it kind of sounded okay.
COL Prateep Suphanrojn is a Master at arranging. He has arranged many Thai traditional music for the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also arranged them for the Wind Band. In his role in the military and at the Mahidol University, he has arranged many of the late King’s music, Thai traditional music and also music from neighbouring ASEAN countries for high level Ministerial Meetings. Below is an example of a piece of music that was arranged for both the symphony orchestra and the wind band.
COL Prateep also arranged the following Impressions of Malaysia
There are just too many works to go through and we will be playing some of his compositions and arrangements for this year’s Woodlands Young Conductors Workshop (WYCW). So if you are keen to pick up tips from the Master, be sure to register for the WYCW or just the Composing and Arranging for the Wind Band Workshop.
