RPWS is really proud of our 2 year conducting mentorship program. Each year in June, a first year student is selected by audition to undergo a 2 year conducting mentorship program that teaches them the art of conducting and also providing them with ample podium time to aid them in their learning. The selected ACM will join the current year committee where he or she will be exposed to student leadership roles.

This year we have 6 participants who have came forward to audition and I am really excited of what each could bring to the table. Each of them have had varied experiences in previous bands and all of them are really strong instrumentalists. I always find this an important pre-requisite to conducting.

What is the process this year?

  1. Music Theory AssessmentThey will sit for a 2-hour paper that will test their ability to harmonize a short given melody. They will also be tested on knowledge of transposition. This skill will aid them in score preparation. They will be tested on knowledge of orchestration. They will need to orchestrate a given melody for a small ensemble. Finally, they will be tested on conductor score reading; terms, etc.
  2. Conducting. They have each been given a score or a movement of a score to prepare. They will be given 25 minutes to rehearse the band on the given score and then they have 5 minutes to do a run through. During this part, they will be assessed on podium presence, leadership and learning potential and rapport with the band.

The chosen ACM will join the CM in this year’s Woodlands Young Conductors Workshop (WYCW) in September where they will be learning from COL Prateep Suphanrojn who will co-tutor the workshop with me. To know more about the WYCW 2017, please click here https://goo.gl/Rp8mXS
