While many would still be in bed on last Sunday (March 26) morning, the young members of the SWS Youth, especially the Executive Committee, were busy getting ready for the inaugural conducting workshop and tune-in sessions. By the time Music Director of SWS, Mr Adrian Tan and myself were there, the group was ready and we began with the session.

Adrian and I decided to take turns working with the participants and to jump in as and when we felt we could add on – a great formula for each participant as they would get insights from 2 sources at the same time. The repertoire for the day were Second Suite in F by Gustav Holst and The Bandsman March by Terrence Wong. We were fortunate to have Terrence present to give insights into the March that he wrote.

The following were discussed during the session with the participants while on podium.

  1. Bad posture and unnecessary body movements that disrupt the flow of music and may course bodily harm. Facial expression.
  2. Eye – Musician contact versus Eye – Score contact. What is a recommended balance between the two? Score preparation.
  3. Beat patterns and what aspects of the music should be focused on when conducting.
  4. Don’t be apologetic, be clear.

What I noticed during the session is the ability of the SWS Youth to respond to each of the participant’s request on podium. Sadly I do not have videos to share. This is clearly an indication of the level of musicianship and potential of the ensemble. The challenge for this group is to realize that potential in them and to understand that music-making should always be fun! (fun-fun and serious-fun)

I am grateful to Adrian for the opportunity to be involved with the workshop and also to conduct the band during the tune-in. I am looking forward to being part of their concert later in June this year.
